Asma Kazmi and Jill Miller Showcase “Carbonivore” at Gray Area Exhibition

We're thrilled to share that BCNM faculty members Asma Kazmi and Jill Miller have unveiled Carbonivore, a new immersive installation at Gray Area Gallery, running from April 22 to July 20, 2025. Sponsored in part by the Berkeley Center for New Media, this work is part of the Missing Objects Library project and challenges the myth of digital immateriality by spotlighting the environmental and human costs of networked technology.

Constructed from 2,000 pounds of reclaimed e-waste, Carbonivore speculates on a grotesque hybrid creature composed of wires, servers, and rare earth materials—physically and metaphorically linking our devices to the mines, labor, and ecological damage that enable them. The installation is part of Gray Area’s C/Change initiative, produced in collaboration with the Goethe Institut San Francisco.
