The Book of the Dead in 3D with Rita Lucarelli

UC Berkeley Professor and Egypgytologist Rita Lucarelli's Return to the Tomb project is an immersive virtual reality experience that will allow viewers to see what it feels like to walk around a tomb, interact with ancient Egyptian texts, and see a coffin. The project, which BCNM provided a seed grant for, will debut at the Pheobe Apperson Hearst Museum of Anthropology on campus later this year. It is based on Professor Lucarelli's previous research in digitizing information surrounding ancient Egyptian burial practices and beliefs about the afterlife. Her collaborators include UC Berkeley Egyptology doctoral students Jessica Johnson and Kea Johnston, UC Santa Cruz Egyptologist and digital humanist Elaine Sullivan, UC Berkeley research data manager Chris Hoffman, and UC Santa Cruz and UC Berkeley graduates Reed Scriven, Savannah Dawson and Nik Yerasi.
