Join us for a lunchtime conversation about current creative work in the design world with Eric Rodenbeck, the founder of Stamen Design, an award-winning data visualization design studio based in San Francisco whose clients include National Geographic, Facebook, and the Dalai Lama. Rodenbeck will be in conversation with Eric Paulos, who helped launch the Berkeley MDes Program earlier this year. This event will be held in a meeting format and we encourage students' participation!
About Eric Rodenbeck
Eric Rodenbeck is the Founding Partner of Stamen Design in San Francisco, which builds beautiful, playful, technically sophisticated mapping and data visualization projects for clients from the Dalai Lama to the World Health Organization to scientists around the world. Uniquely interdisciplinary, for twenty years his work also intersects with the world of fine art, has been exhibited worldwide at the Venice Biennale, Victoria and Albert Museum, SFMOMA, Art Institute of Chicago and others, and is in the permanent collections of MoMA & the Smithsonian. Eric was expelled from the Cooper Union and studied science fiction and the history of technology at the New School for Social Research, both in New York City. Stamen is a winner of the National Design Award for Interaction Design.
About Eric Paulos
Eric Paulos is the Chief Learning Officer for the Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation and Professor in Electrical Engineering Computer Science at UC Berkeley. He is also founder and director of the Hybrid Ecologies Lab, Director of the CITRIS Invention Lab, a Co-Director of the Swarm Lab, and faculty within the Berkeley Center for New Media (BCNM). Previously, Eric held the Cooper-Siegel Associate Professor Chair in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University where he was faculty within the Human-Computer Interaction Institute with courtesy faculty appointments in the Robotics Institute and in the Entertainment Technology Center. At CMU he founded and directed the Living Environments Lab. His areas of expertise span a deep body of research territory in critical making, design research, urban computing, sustainability, social telepresence, robotics, physical computing, interaction design, persuasive technologies, and intimate media.
