About the DE in New Media (Ph.D. Students)
BCNM’s Designated Emphasis (D.E.) program is for selected UC Berkeley Ph.D. students from any Berkeley home department with research interests in new media. It is supplemental to the Ph.D. program in regular departments, and provides enhanced skills in analyzing and/or designing future media with an awareness of historical, social, cultural perspectives that might not be visible from any single disciplinary point of view.
If you are submitting an application for the Designated Emphasis, you may apply here.
About the Graduate Certificate in New Media (M.A. Students)
The Graduate Certificate is designed to enhance interdisciplinary graduate studies for students currently enrolled in a M.A. program at UC Berkeley. The Certificate emphasizes a critical understanding of the nature and implications of new media, drawing on theories and methodologies from across the disciplinary spectrum—the arts, the humanities and social sciences, and science and engineering. The Graduate Certificate in New Media provides students with an introduction to the different facets of new media research and an ensuing competitive edge for some of the most desirable jobs in industry and academia.

About BCNM
The Berkeley Center for New Media is an interdisciplinary research center that studies and shapes media transition and emergence from diverse perspectives. Through critical thinking and making, we cultivate technological equity and fairness in our classrooms, in our communities, and on the internet.
We focus on questions of how radical shifts in technology intersect with radical shifts in society, culture, politics, and economics. In this moment of transformation, BCNM leads what must be a global effort to build just and equitable technological futures, especially by honoring and centering women, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, Global South, ability diverse, and socioeconomically disadvantaged peoples as makers and users of new media. We do this by platforming and maintaining inclusive communities for our curriculum and degrees, faculty and student research, and public outreach.
