Alex Saum-Pascual & Shannon Jackson Named 2023 Townsend Fellows

Congratulations to Alex Saum-Pascual and Shannon Jackson on being named Townsend Fellows for 2023-2024!

The Townsend Fellowships program supports the research of faculty, advanced graduate students, and other research professionals at UC Berkeley. The purpose of the Fellowship is to further the research of the individual recipients and to enable faculty and graduate students within the humanities to meet and work with colleagues in other disciplines and departments. The Fellows program receives core funding from the Townsend Endowment. Graduate student support is also provided by the Irving and Jean Stone Fellowship, the Albert Lepawsky Memorial Fund, the Norman Jacobson Memorial Fund, the Jeffrey Berg Fellowship, and Una’s Gift Fund.

Shannon Jackson works on socially-engaged art and cross-media aesthetics in a contemporary global context. Her current focus is video art, public art, and experimental performances that address ecological themes.

Alex Saum-Pascual explores the relationship between digital technologies and literary production, looking at the ways in which these media engage with concepts of environmental crisis, through a new materialist lens. Her current book project focuses on the work of digital artists from Spain and the Latin American Diaspora to examine digital materiality in relation to its physical and signifying strategies.
