Abby Yue Gao's Wildfire Disaster Response in Berkeley News
BCNM alum Abby Yue Gao was featured on Berkeley news for their work building emergency communications for wildfires!
After experiencing severe impacts on classes and life due to the California wildfire season, Abby Yue Gao attempted to take development engineering courses to solve a real-world problem and think about the best way to use technology in a disaster situation. She and her team successfully created EvacMap, a prototype app for getting out up-to-date evacuation information during wildfires. A little over a year later, EvacMap became WEmap, a research project examining language-based needs in the dissemination of wildfire emergency information. It’s informing the way some of Marin County’s residents with limited English proficiency receive emergency information and resources.
