Professor Jenna Burrell has joined BCNM's executive committee! She teaches at UC Berkeley's School of Information, with research focuses in how marginalized communities adapt digital technologies, algorithmic fairness and opacity, human control over algorithms, and ethnography. Burrell is the co-director of the Algorithmic Fairness and Opacity Group (AFOG) and the author of Invisible Users: Youth in the Internet Cafes of Urban Ghana (The MIT Press, 2012), with a second book currently in progress about rural communities that host critical Internet infrastructure such as fiber optic cables and data centers.
