Alenda Chang on Primal Tourism

BCNM alum and UC Santa Barbara professor of Film and Media Studies Alenda Chang is featured in artist Jakob Kudsk Steensen's virtual VR gaming event. The environment is composed of a virtual island modeled on Bora Bora in French Polynesia, which was initially developed for Kudsk's work Primal Tourism (2016). In this work, the artist takes us on an immersive tour of his world. The settings for the game include an abandoned airport, a flooded beach resort, a deserted workers town, an old colonial office, and an overgrown forest, floor strewn with tsunami warning signs from a past future. Besides Prof. Chang, the event features Jakob's other collaborators, including artist Rindon Johnson and writer Mikkel Rosengaard. The event also features live readings about the ecological present, discussions on creative world-building methods, and the ‘reimagination of nature’ through technology.
