Commons Conversations Video Now Online: Rahul Gairola
Rahul Gairola started 2020 off with a bang, revitalizing our Commons Conversations series for the new year. "Digital Hijras: Intersex/ tions of Postcolonial and Queer Digital Humanities” asked the audience to historically and critically read hijras’ (transgender womens') identities on social media platforms.
The talk zeroed in on Bombay Dost (BD), India’s first registered LGBTQ+ magazine. Gairola pulls material from his book, Homelandings: Postcolonial Diasporas and Transatlantic Belonging, to illuminate how queerness is represented in India today. Utilizing historical context and contemporary connectivity, BD's Facebook page is a site for others to recognize how hyperlinked identities are being transformed and made visible.
