Revisited: Art + Feminism, Race, & Justice Editathon

With less than 10% of Wikipedia editors identifying as female, Art+Feminism emphasized the importance of elevating the voices of underrepresented groups such as minorities and women. In partnership with American Cultures, Art History/Classics Library, the Berkeley Center for New Media, DH at Berkeley, the D-Lab, and the Wiki Education Foundation, Art+Feminism hosted an open edit-a-thon, where people of any gender, race, age, or background were welcome to participate and improve coverage. Approximately 70 attendees brought their own laptop and made Wikipedia accounts so they could edit entries.

At different points throughout the communal updating session, organizers would offer best practices advice and tips so that people's Wikipedia entries wouldn't be deemed invalid by the site. For example, they highlighted the need to source their contributions and to refrain from putting their own, unpublished research on the entry itself. Art history books were on hand as well as possible source materials. The organizers also acted as resources by overseeing the edits being made and guiding new editors when necessary. The event connected strangers and friends as conversations emerged on the editing process.
