NWMEDIA 190/290 Critical Practices Showcase
An amazing showcase of work from NWMEDIA 190/290: Critical Practices, taught by Jill Miller, at the Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation Winter Showcase on December 6th, 2017! The students engaged with critical questions around society through artistically designed interventions. One Pachinko game questioned participants' understanding of internet privacy (although most users were willing to give all their identifying information away for the promise of a free donut!). Another group produced The Bank of Hysteria to intervene in the stereotype of "the angry black woman." Users were invited to call or text the Bank of Hysteria and leave their angry messages, which they felt they could not speak out loud for fear of being labeled. At the showcase, these messages were printed on a never-ending receipt and visitors could cut out the ones that spoke to their own concerns and feelings. Building on issues around emotions, another project built a terrarium that was watered when wearing glasses beneath which user's cry to attempt to harness emotion positively. Still others found ways of displaying emotions through wearable tech and meeting friends through shared buildable cell-phone cases. Congratulations everyone!
