Fall 2015 Events Sneak Preview

Mark your calendars — BCNM is hard at work bringing together a brilliant Fall 2015 program! Check out some of these great events!

Confirmed for the Art, Technology, and Culture Colloquium

We'll be kicking off ATC with the incredible Vito Acconci on Monday, September 28 in Sutardja Dai Hall. Vito Acconci is a renowned American designer, landscape architect, performance and installation artist. At the ATC program, he'll be discussing how his art treats surveillance, a subject he began exploring with his 1969 work "Following Piece." On Monday, November 2, we'll be treated to a talk from critical engineer and artist Julian Oliver. From software to data forensics, creative hacking to computer networking, counter surveillance to virtual architecture, Julian's art draws inspiration from his engineering background to comment on our world.

Confirmed for the History and Theory of New Media Lecture Series

HTNM continues with leading scholars of new media. We've just confirmed Professor of Epistemology and Philosophy of Digital Media Claus Pias from Leuphana University will be joining us on Thursday, October 16. Dr Pias founded the Center for Digital Cultures that draws together more than eighty entrepreneurs, activists and artists, producers and hackers, thinkers and doers to broker dynamic connections.

Upcoming Conferences

Don't miss out on these stellar conferences! October is going to be epic!

October 15-17: Precarious Aesthetics — Precarious Aesthetics is a three day interdisciplinary conference on the precarious nature of visual mediation. The conference explores the tension between our ever greater technological capacity for clarity coupled with the increasingly popular use of blur, noise, and non-transparent filters in our visual culture. From over 160 respondents, we have formed a phenomenal 54-speaker program, who are attacking this subject from political, historical, technical, theoretical, and philosophical perspectives. Keynote speakers include Tom Gunning, W. J. T. Mitchell, and Mark Hansen.
October 16-18: Queerness and Games QGCon is an annual, community-oriented, nationally-recognized event dedicated to exploring the intersection of LGBTQ issues and video games. QGCon seeks to foster dialogue between scholars, game developers, and game players. Its audiences are diverse, and presentations emphasize engagement and play. Addressing topics of gender, race, ability, body type, class, etc., QGCon reminds us that the struggles (and victories) of those of us who play from the margins are interconnected struggles.
October 27-28: Manufacturing Transparency — Manufacturing Transparency is an interdisciplinary conference that explores whether the move towards transparency is ushering in a more critical society or paradoxically yielding the opposite results. At the heart of the program, we ask who is manufacturing transparency and what is the topology of the transparency we experience, interrogating these questions from fields as diverse as politics, media, architecture, digital culture, philosophy etc.
