Investigating the liminal sites between spaces, whether a physical space between points A and B, or the linkage between material observations and imaginary thoughts about them, Henry Witecki hacks or detunes the high and low technologies that compose his work. "The Bridge" (2012), is an electronics integrated photograph printed on backlight film laminated over a television screen. The video is effectively rear-projected through the printed image to illuminate and animate a 60-image composite of the artist commute across the Bay Bridge into his San Francisco studio. A total of 60 instants, taken within 20 contiguous minutes, sampled out of two days, a week apart are collapsed into a mesmerizing 36-frame animation, which loops at a variable speed infinitely. The effect is a beautifully complicated intertwining of trusses and cables, shifting perceptibility to avoid comprehension.

Henry Witecki is an interdisciplinary artist and writer living and working in the bay area. Witecki’s work manifest in large-scale immersive installations, collaborative sculptures, and works for the screen. His writing practice is primarily focused on cultural criticism and art reviewing. Witecki is also an avid YouTuber, producing everything from instructional videos to experimental analog video synthesis. HenryWitecki.com is a repository for and gateway to his multi-faceted production. A recent MFA graduate of California College of the Arts, Witecki will be receiving a second Masters degree in Visual Critical Studies from CCA in 2013.

Henry Witecki will speak about his work at the October 16, 2012 meeting of the Townsend Center New Media Working Group at 6.30pm in the BCNM Commons. More information on this event can be found here.
