Conference Grant Reports: Alexis Wood at AAG

We are pleased to support our students sharing their work at the premiere conferences in their field. Alexis Wood presented “Constellations as Critical Cartographic Method" at the Annual Conference of the American Association of Geographers (AAG):

Alexis Wood (Geography & BCNM) and Maggie Camillos presented their upcoming paper, "Constellations as Critical Cartographic Method" at the 2024 American Association of Geographers (AAG) meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii. Wood presented in a session co-organized by Clancy Wilmott and Emma Fraser titled, A space for experimental geographies: studio.geo?, which showcased the various research projects being undertaken in Wilmott's critical cartography studio - including the work of fellow Geography and New Media Designated Emphasis PhD Students Sophia Perez, Maria Pettis and J. Lee Crandall. Wood's paper argues for an approach to critical cartographic method through Benjamin's concept of the constellation, embracing the theory's fragmentary approach to time and space. Wood also participated as a panelist in the session titled, What now? Reflections on the 2020 Redistricting Cycle and thoughts towards 2030, where she reflected on her previous work in redistricting and conversed with other electoral geographers on how to prepare for the next redistricting cycle.
