If Sex Workers Owned the Internet: a Juliana Friend Interview

In collaboration with the Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity (CLTC) at UC Berkeley, alum Juliana Friend, Ph.D.'s most recent project amplifies the perspectives of sex workers from LMICs who envision more inclusive approaches to cybersecurity and digital privacy. Dr. Juliana Friend is an anthropologist working at the intersection of health equity and tech policy, who facilitated the conversation between Ndeye Ndiaye and Yacine Diouf. Ndeye and Yacine are pseudonyms for the co-authors’ anonymity and safety as they are two Senegalese activists who practice sex work and want to share their perspectives on digital privacy with international audiences.

Ndeye and Yacine told Juliana they wanted to speak directly to English-speaking readers, "They have ideas they want tech leaders and policymakers to hear. They want Americans like me to challenge the status quo. So when I visited them in Senegal in June 2022, we decided to record a conversation, transcribe it, anonymize it, translate it, and publish the bilingual transcript."
