Digital Media Artist Jim Campbell Celebrated as “Bay Area Treasure”

Brooke Belisle, Ph.D. candidate in Rhetoric with a Designated Emphasis in New Media

Brooke spoke at the Berkeley Art Museum about Jim Campbell’s Home Movies installation in 2008 and is preparing an article on his work.

On October 23rd, SFMOMA honored local artist Jim Campbell as a “Bay Area Treasure”. Exhibiting since the 1990’s, Campbell is only recently receiving the attention he deserves for new media artworks that are as original and intelligent as they are beautiful.

If you walked into, or even by SFMOMA last year, then you saw Campbell’s installation Exploded Views. A flickering grid of almost 3000 LED lights, was installed like an enormous chandelier in the museum’s atrium and was visible even from the sidewalk outside.
