Presented by the Performing Asian American & Diasporic Sexualities Working Group. Co-sponsored by Berkeley Center for New Media (BCNM), Townsend Center for the Humanities, Asian American Research Center, Institute of East Asian Studies, Department of Gender and Women’s Studies, Asian American and Asian Diaspora Studies Program, History of Art Department, Department of Rhetoric, Othering and Belonging Institute - LGBTQ Citizenship Cluster, and Gender Equity Resource Center (GenEq)

with Elliot Bear Yu, Multi-Mixed-Media Artist

Edmond Y. Chang, Associate Professor, Ohio University

Join multi-media artist and game designer Elliot Bear Yu and scholar Edmond Y.Chang (Ohio University) for a virtual studio visit that redefines the intersections of art, play, and research. Elliot’s transition from academia to his MFA showcases innovative approaches to scholarship, including the creation of a groundbreaking MA thesis entirely within the 3D modeling program Blender—a project deemed too unconventional for traditional academic frameworks.

Repairing the deep tensions between traditional scholarship and artistry, Elliot and Edmond will explore how play and exploration are central to both research and artistic practice. Discover how Elliot’s work bridges the worlds of gaming, design, and embodiment, challenging norms and redefining what counts as knowledge production.
