BCNM at the American Association of Geographers Annual Conference

BCNM members Emma Fraser, Clancy Wilmott, and Will Payne presented at American Association of Geographer's 2021 Annual Meeting. In the four-day event, members presented their work on the theory, methods, and practice of geography. This year, three BCNM members were attendees.

Emma Fraser featured in "The Geographies of Games 1 - Digital Games and Spaces." Along with two other presenters, Emma spoke on her paper, Digital Alternatives - Queering Video Game Spaces Through Ruins. Emma's paper discusses the social and cultural spaces of digital gaming through the themes of Queerness and ruins.

Clancy Wilmott featured in two events: "Politics and Identity in Digital Geographies II" and "The Geographies of Games 2 - Material Games and Spaces." In "Politics and Identity in Digital Geographies II," Clancy discussed her paper, From Big Daddy Mainframe to Indigenous Blockchain: techno-politics, identities and spatialities in digital geographies, which explores the influence of critical and countercultural identity movements on digital spaces and spatialities. In "The Geographies of Games 2 - Mateiral Games and Spaces," Clancy speaks on the role of digital places and landscapes in games.

Will Payne featured in "Politics and Identity in Digital Geographies I." Will presented his paper, Review Bombing the Smart City: Contested Political Speech. The paper examines how the automated and human judgement of various location-based services and geography-related platforms result in the limits of acceptable political speech in local reviews.
