Announcing the BCNM Land Acknowledgement

The Berkeley Center for New Media is grateful to Indigenous Technologies Coordinator Marcelo Garzo Montalvo, Visiting Professor at Harvard University and recent UC Berkeley alum, and the Sogorea Te' Land Trust, for helping us to shape an acknowledgement of our place on Lisjan land. We are pleased to share this acknowledgement, which launches our ongoing relationship with the Land Trust, to which we are proud to pay an annual Shuumi Tax. For more information on our Indigenous Technologies initiative, please visit our resources page here.

We recognize that BCNM is located in the territory of Huichin, the ancestral and unceded lands of Chochenyo speaking Ohlone peoples, specifically, the Confederated Villages of Lisjan. The history of prolific technological development in this region has always depended on this land, and all of our technological infrastructures and activities take place on and in relation to this land. We commit to supporting the sovereignty and ongoing stewardship of this place by Ohlone peoples through building long-term reciprocity and relationship with tribal leaders and organizations.
