HTNM Video Now Online: Art & AI

There was no better way for BCNM to end our 2019-2020 lecture season than with Sheila C. Johnson Design Center's chief curator Christiane Paul. For the last installment of our History, Theory and New Media Lecture Series, Paul and curator-cum-respondent Claudia Schmuckli engaged in a discussion about "Art & AI" — how contemporary artists work with artificial intelligence.

A number of different topics appeared throughout the session: pop culture depictions; robo-exoticism; bias in machine learning; and more. However, a bulk of the talk focuses on Paul's recent exhibition, The Question of Intelligence, and the different themes and messages being displayed across the curated art pieces. Schmuckli and Paul also explored how artist engagement with AI has changed since its emergence into pop culture, citing heightened visibility and an increasing number of artistic tools.
