About the DE in New Media (Ph.D. Students)

BCNM’s Designated Emphasis (D.E.) program is for selected UC Berkeley Ph.D. students from any Berkeley home department with research interests in new media. It is supplemental to the Ph.D. program in regular departments, and provides enhanced skills in analyzing and/or designing future media with an awareness of historical, social, cultural perspectives that might not be visible from any single disciplinary point of view.

If you are submitting an application for the Designated Emphasis, you may apply here.

About the Graduate Certificate in New Media (M.A. Students)

The Graduate Certificate is designed to enhance interdisciplinary graduate studies for students currently enrolled in a M.A. program at UC Berkeley. The Certificate emphasizes a critical understanding of the nature and implications of new media, drawing on theories and methodologies from across the disciplinary spectrum—the arts, the humanities and social sciences, and science and engineering. The Graduate Certificate in New Media provides students with an introduction to the different facets of new media research and an ensuing competitive edge for some of the most desirable jobs in industry and academia.

*M.A. students must apply to the Certificate Program during their first year of study.

If you are submitting an application for the Masters Certificate, you may apply here.

About BCNM

The Berkeley Center for New Media is a focal point for research and teaching about new media, led by a highly trans-disciplinary community of 120 affiliated faculty, advisors, and scholars, from 35 UC Berkeley departments. BCNM aims to analyze and shape developments in new media through critical theory, critical practice, and innovation. We study how we use emerging technologies to forge innovative means of expression from multidisciplinary and global perspectives, and examine the risks and opportunities for new media to influence human interactions in the contexts of science, law, democracy, education and art. A magnet for rigorous scholars who challenge conventional thinking through collaboration, we catalyze research by offering a dynamic environment that exposes all participants to diverse values, objectives, and methodologies. Our researchers make, break, and recreate media objects, processes, and ideas to grapple with the question of what makes us real. The Center itself acts a medium between people, technologies, and ideas.
