Now Accepting Applications for the 2020 Lyman Fellowship

The Peter Lyman Graduate Fellowship in new media, established in the memory of esteemed UC Berkeley Professor Peter Lyman, provides a stipend to a UC Berkeley Ph.D. candidate to support the writing of his or her Ph.D. dissertation on a topic related to new media. The fellowship is supported by donations from Professor Barrie Thorne, Sage Publications and many individual friends and faculty.

Applications for summer 2020 are now open. To apply for the Lyman Fellowship, please fill in this form by February 1, 2020.

Some preference will be given to those doing research related to children and youth, and to BCNM Designated Emphasis students, but originality and quality of research are the primary criteria.

The amount of the stipend depends on the size of the fund. In 2019 the fellowship amount was $6,000.00.

You must be a UC Berkeley Ph.D. student who has passed his or her qualifying exams to apply.

Previous fellows include Cherise McBridge for "Becoming Designers of Digitally-Mediated Learning: A Situated Model of Digital Pedagogy," which explores exploration how teachers enrolled in a graduate-level technology course came to understand, reveal and apply sociocultural knowledge in their designs of digitally-mediated learning; Grace Gipson for her work on “Releasing Your Inner Superhero,” which works with the SCAT (Supporting Computational Algorithmic Thinking) Scholars program; Nicholaus Gutierrez for his research on the virtual and why it plays a prominent but ambiguous role in describing digital technologies; Ritwik Banerji, who worked on "An Astromusicological Study of the Maxineans"; Renée Pastel for her project "War on Terror"; Jenni Higgs for her dissertation "Digital Talk"; and Kyle Booten for his studies in "Quotation Practices." Previous recipients have since developed the work that they began as Lyman Fellows and published books with leading academic publishers.
