Alum Bo Ruberg's Book Reviewed in Feminist Media Studies

BCNM is thrilled to see our alum Bonnie Ruberg's book, Video Games Have Always Been Queer, reviewed in Feminist Media Studies! The review, written by Michael Anthony DeAnda, was published August 2019. Ruberg is currently the assistant professor of digital games and interactive media in the Department of Informatics at the University of California, Irvine.

From the review:

Many scholars have identified the ways in which mainstream gaming culture continues to privilege straight, white, male, cisgender, able-bodied, young men (Jennifer deWinter and Carly A. Kocurek 2012, Elise Vist 2015, Edmund Y. Chang 2017) In Video Games Have Always Been Queer, Bonnie Ruberg confronts this narrative by uncovering how, as the title suggests, queerness has deeply shaped and continues to mold video games. Doing so, Ruberg powerfully calls for the reclaiming of the entirety of the games medium, identifying how LGBTQ players have always belonged in games (209). Ruberg highlights how queerness and video games are intimately connected beyond representation.
