Bayal Kaymanen (Dancing Smoke) at Berkeley August 2nd!

Bélgica del Rio has been working with the Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies to bring Bayal Kaymanen (Dancing Smoke) to campus! The full-length dance production will take place on Friday, August 2, 2019 at 8:30pm at Memorial Glade.

Bayal Kaymanen explores the relationship of fire between Yidinji Nation from Cairns, Australia and Northern Pomo Dancers from Northern California.

Bringing together young people and their communities, Bayal Kaymanen explores the notions of fire in ceremony and the connections between the two groups. The collaborative development has occurred over two years and focuses on inter-generational and cross-cultural engagement.

Although an ocean separates the groups, the connections and learnings about each other’s cultures and relationship to fire has shown we are more similar than different. The performance will take place on Ohlone homelands in Huichin (Berkeley) and will bring dancers from the Cairns region to perform with the Northern Pomo Dancers.

Please join us for this family-friendly, community event for a night under the stars of storytelling through traditional and contemporary dance and song by young people from Northern Pomo and Yidinji Nation lands.
