Open House Fall 2018 Revisited

On August 21, BCNM kicked off the fall 2018 semester with it’s annual open house! Students, faculty, and staff from across the campus had the opportunity to connect with a wealth of programs and resources, and the people responsible for making the new media magic happen at Cal!

Attendees were treated to exciting new media research taking place on campus including demonstrations from Eric Paulos' Hybrid Ecologies Lab, video screenings from Asma Kazmi, and tangible interfaces from Kimiko Ryokai, while mingling with the interconnected web of people that make BCNM such a dynamic hub.

Speakers presented an overview of the wide range of new media programs available at Cal, including Massimo Pacchione (Berkeley Art + Design), Claudia von Vacano (Digital Humanities and D-Lab), Emily Rice (Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation), Lauren Pearson (Arts Research Center), Morgan Ames (Center for Science, Technology, Medicine, and Society), Susan Moffat (Global Urban Humanities), Eric Paulos (CITRIS Invention Lab), as well as Will Payne (New Media Working Group), and Miyoko Conley (Color of New Media Working Group).

Nicholas de Monchaux (director, BCNM) discussed the exciting lineup of upcoming events for the 2018-2019 year in BCNM’s Art, Technology and Culture colloquium, including fall lectures with Roxane Gay, Kelani Nichole, Kerry Tribe, Kim Stanley Robinson, and Marisa Moran Jahn; talks by Molly Wright Steenson and Timothy Stott for the History and Theory of New Media lecture series; and Commons Conversations including the upcoming “Love Bytes and Intimate Machines” with Belinda Middleweek.

BCNM’s fall symposium Hacking Politics, will start with a keynote at SFMOMA on October 18 and the conference on campus October 19. If you are interested in registering, please click here for more information.
