Mutated Text Workshop

Mutated Text, a cross-genre creative writing workshop co-organized by Margaret Rhee (Ph.D. Ethnic Studies, Designated Emphasis in New Media) with support from BCNM, was held April 6, 2012 in Sutardja Dai Hall. The goal of Mutated Text was to pose questions such as, how might scholars and artists in Science and Technology Studies, and New Media Studies enter into transdisciplinary conversations around shared matters of the future, form, and care? With a special focus on process not product, the workshop hoped to foster a space of support for experimental modes of writing and multimodal digital forms for scholarly expressions. Graduate students, scholars, and artists convened to participate in a supportive workshop to test boundaries and foster the possibilities of form, content, and context in creative and academic work.

Special invited speakers included Cecil S. Giscombe, Roxi Power Hamilton, Ronaldo V. Wilson, and Mel Y. Chen. The workshop was co-convened with Martha Kenney a doctoral candidate of the History of Consciousness program at UCSC.
