For this class, student innovators from a wide variety of majors (art, design, engineering and more) work in teams to tackle the challenge of building smart seating. A smart chair might proactively improve posture, sense vital signs through the seat, adjust to put couples at eye level, or do something only you imagine. Designs merge physical form and digital function, aesthetics and intelligence; successful projects will combine shape, mechanisms, electronics and software.
Class meets once per week, and students will spend most of their time in a workshop prototyping, fabricating and testing their designs. Students admitted to the class will be issued a free “Maker Pass” (a pilot program integrating fabrication labs across disciplines) granting access and lab resources at the ME Machine Shop, the Invention Lab, CEE/Davis Welding and Machine Shop, EECS Student Shop (Cory), Supernode and the Student Hub for Engineering & Design (SHED). A limited number of paid URAP summer positions will be available for students to complete their projects over the summer and present results at the launch of the Jacobs Institute.
