BCNM DE student Andrea Horbinski's "Record of Dying Days: The Alternate History of Ōoku" was published last year in the 10th volume of Mechademia, a journal focused on Japanese manga and anime and their connections to broader currents in Japanese culture, society, and history. Her article focuses on the alternative history of Japan presented in Ōoku (大奥), a manga by Fumi Yoshinaga that explores traditional gender roles in Japanese society by reversing them in an Edo period court setting.
