Laura Devendorf to Join ATLAS at CU Boulder

Laura Devendorf is a PhD Candidate at the UC Berkeley School of Information and she'll be joining the faculty of the University of Colorado at Boulder as an assistant professor in the ATLAS Institute in January of 2017! Her tenure home will be in Information Science.

Her work explores relationships with technology and the poetics of technology that doesn’t quite work. She designs, develops, and studies interactive systems that leave room for the user to be challenged in order to provoke curiosity and enchantment with the everyday. She has undergraduate degrees in Studio Art and Computer Science from UC Santa Barbara and continues to practice art in parallel with her academic research. Her advisor is Kimiko Ryokai and she's affiliated with the Berkeley Institute of Design, Berkeley Center for New Media, and the Hybrid Ecologies Lab.

The Alliance for Technology, Learning and Society (ATLAS) is a radically interdisciplinary research and teaching institute at the University of Colorado Boulder. Dedicated to integrating information technologies into all facets of modern life, ATLAS researchers and educators are dreamers and doers who seek to predict the future by inventing it. Organized under the College of Engineering and Applied Science, the institute’s undergraduate and graduate programs encourage out-of-the-box thinking and creative exploration, breeding technology visionaries and virtuosos who reach beyond convention, take risks, and innovate.

The Department of Information Science is within the College of Media, Communication and Information at CU Boulder. Information Science considers the relationships between people, places and technology, as well as the data that results from those interactions. Their interdisciplinary approach draws on social science, the humanities and computer science, allowing us not only to imagine what today’s technology makes possible, but to invent new things society can do with technology.

The College of Media, Communication and Information (CMCI) is the first new college on the CU-Boulder campus in 53 years, and opened in fall 2015. It was created to match the times we live in—times of revolutionary change in the way people communicate, the tools they use to do it and the impact that change has on society.

We're very excited to see what developments come from this new chapter in Laura's life!
