Original Post

Wikimedia’s gender trouble is well-documented. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity is not: content is skewed by the lack of female participation. This represents an alarming absence in an important repository of shared knowledge.

Let’s change that. Drop in 405 Moffitt Undergraduate Library on Tuesday, March 21 from 1:00pm-6:00pm for an all day communal updating of Wikipedia entries. We will provide tutorials for the beginner Wikipedian, reference materials, and refreshments.

Bring your laptop, power cord and ideas for entries that need updating or creation. For the editing-averse, we urge you to stop by to show your support. People of all gender identities and expressions are invited to participate.

How can I participate?
If possible, create a Wikipedia account before the event.
Drop in any time. Stay as long as you like.
Edit on your own or attend an optional training.
Bring a laptop or mobile device.
We'll provide the training, the food, and the fun!

Who is the event open to?
Any member of the UC Berkeley community. A Cal ID card is required to enter Moffitt.

Optional Trainings
We'll always have someone available to assist you personally, or attend a 30 minute training in Moffitt 405:

1:00pm Intro Wikipedia Editing
1:30pm Advanced Wikipedia Editing
3:00pm Intro Wikipedia Editing
3:30pm Advanced Wikipedia Editing
5:00pm Intro Wikipedia Editing

Nope! We'll teach you.

What do I edit?
Anything you'd like! Or follow these suggestions:

If you have 1 hour or less, go to a training and learn more about editing Wikipedia.
If you have 90 minutes, go to a training and add some citations to an article in your area of expertise.
If you have 2 hours, go to a training and add a well cited paragraph to an article in your area of expertise.
If you have 2-4 hours, consider creating a new article. Be sure to gather your reliable sources in advance, or a librarian on site can help you gather reliable sources.
