Critical Time: Claudia La Rocco in Conversation
with Shannon Jackson

Join BCNM Executive Committee member Shannon Jackson for this great conversation!

For the last three years, ARC has explored a variety of time-based art practices from different disciplinary and regional perspectives. We have considered time-based practice in relation to the formal legacies of visual, performance, and cinematic forms. We have focused on places where experimental artists and curators learn from and revise each other, as well as the blindspots that still exist amongst contemporary circles of sculptural, choreographic, theatrical, musical, photographic, video, and installation art practice.

With a visit from Claudia La Rocco, we hope to focus on the role of the critic in this landscape. What questions do critics ask of work that crosses art forms? What vocabularies do they use and what new terms do they find themselves using? How do different kinds of publications enable and constrain critical reflection that crosses artistic categories? What readers do they hope to reach and cultivate with their writing?

Claudia La Rocco is a poet and critic. Her recent and ongoing interdisciplinary collaborations include projects with the choreographers Rashaun Mitchell and Silas Riener, the performance company Findlay//Sandsmark, the visual artist Brett Goodroad and the composer Phillip Greenlief. La Rocco founded thePerformanceClub.org, which won a 2011 Creative Capital/Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant and focuses on criticism as a literary art form. She is a member of the Off the Park poetry press and contributes frequently to the New York Times and Artforum.com. She is on the faculty of the School of Visual Arts' graduate program in Art Criticism and Writing, and teaches at such institutions as Princeton University, ImpulsTanz Vienna International Dance Festival and Movement Research. She has had residencies at Mount Tremper Arts, Arizona State University and Headlands Center for the Arts. A book of her selected writings is scheduled to be published by Badlands Unlimited in fall 2014.

This event is co-sponsored by the Berkeley Center for New Media.
