Prospective Student Open House

Please join the Berkeley Center for New Media for lunch on Monday, March 17th to learn more about the program and the research projects our faculty and students undertake. Francesco Spagnolo will provide our keynote address, with a discussion on digital humanities.

Mapping Diasporas: Jews, Material Culture, and the Digital Humanities
Francesco Spagnolo, Curator, The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life, UC Berkeley

The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life, one of the largest Jewish museum collections in the world, was established in 2010 after the transfer of the Judah L. Magnes Museum to the University of California, Berkeley. Its remarkably diverse archive, library and museum holdings include over 15,000 objects documenting material culture and art from the global Jewish diaspora and the American west. The digitization of the collection includes texts, images, sounds, and metadata, which are shared online with the academic community and the public. Curatorial work with this collection crosses many disciplines--including history and art history, comparative literature, anthropology, art practice, performance studies, and music--and collaborative practices informed by the digital humanities. The presentation will highlight how research about The Magnes Collection involves a confluence of database, social media, and web platforms, through projects that integrate student and faculty engagement, physical exhibitions and online digital narratives.

Francesco Spagnolo, PhD, is the Curator of The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life and a Lecturer in the Department of Music at UC Berkeley.
