| Other Info | The British-based artist Liliane Lijn [ http://www.lilianelijn.com ], together with her collaborator, Berkeley-based astrophysicist John Vallerga, are setting up a temporary installation of their larger work-in-progress -- SOLAR HILLS -- on Hawk Peak in the Marin Headlands on the morning of July 5. Two computer-guided spectroheliostats will focus and beam back the sun's light prismatically, through a shifting spectrum of colors, creating an array visible from Crissy Field in San Francisco. The planned time for the event is from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm. A crew from BBC TV in London will be filming the installation for a film on "Artists Working With Light" (it includes James Turrell, Robert Irwin and Anthony McCall as well as Lijn) for the Imagine Arts program to run on BBC 1 in October. Director of the film is Tim Kirby, assistant producer is Hattie Bowering and the presenter is Alan Yentob. The artist will be there to respond to viewers' questions. PLEASE NOTE: Successful installation is dependent on weather conditions and on receiving the necessary permits. We will have more definitive information regarding the above conditions 3 to 4 days prior to the event. I'll post an email update at that time with exact times and viewing location[s]. Should Hawk Peak be fogged in on the morning of July 5th, the alternative installation site will be on Grizzly Peak in Berkeley later that day. |

Hey, Rick, thanks for posting this! Readers should know that this project originated while Liliane Lijn was LEONARDO’s first artist in residence at the Space Sciences Lab in Berkeley in 2005, where she met her collaborator, the astrophysicist John Vallerga. Lijn is an early pioneer among artists working with science and technology. Her most recent exhibition (through July 3, ‘08) at Riflemakers Gallery in London features sculptures made from Aerogel, a substance used (literally) to capture stardust. She’s amazing as is her work. My dream is to organize a retrospective museum survey of Lijn’s work from the 60’s to the present, accompanied by the book she deserves.

To everyone interested in Solar Hills: please check this blog for current updates on when and where it can be viewed on Saturday, July 5. It’ll be either Crissy Field in SF from 10:30 am – 1:30 pm, OR from the Berkeley Marina in the afternoon. Please stay tuned!

This promises to be an exciting event–congratulations Marcia! We can hope for no fog, but good for you for making a contingency plan. Look forward to it.

We hope to be refracting light to Crissey Field by 10:30 AM, depending on the fog, but will continue
until around 1:30PM, so you don’ thave to be there
exactly at 10:30 to see it.

Early a.m. tomorrow (Saturday, July 5) Liliane, John and crew will install the spectroheliostats on Hawk Hill, Marin Headlands, aiming them @ Crissy Field, and will wait for the fog to lift. The ideal viewing area is on or near the lagoon bridge @ Crissy Field. If the fog doesn’t lift by 1 pm they will relocate the installation to Grizzly Peak in Berkeley, and it will be viewable ca. 4 pm from the grassy field/kite-flying area on the Berkeley Marina. Fingers crossed, and thanks for your interest!
